Health experts advise on safe air conditioning usage

Medical experts clarify that air conditioning does not directly transmit viruses or cause illness, but improper use and maintenance can lead to various health issues.

Dr. Frédéric Le Guillou, a pulmonologist and president of Santé respiratoire France, notes that air conditioning reduces humidity, which can dry out mucous membranes in the nose and throat, leading to irritation, nasal discharge, or coughing. Furthermore, poorly maintained units can accumulate dust, mold, and bacteria, which may be dispersed into the air and cause respiratory infections. Lack of ventilation can also cause allergens like dust mites and pet hair to remain suspended in the air.

Dr. Maryse Zaleski-Zamenhof advises against setting temperatures too low. To avoid muscle contractures, headaches, and fatigue, the ideal indoor temperature should be between 25°C and 26°C, maintaining a maximum difference of 5 to 7°C from the outside temperature. Additionally, users should avoid directing cold airflow directly at themselves to prevent eye and throat dryness. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters every three to four weeks, is recommended to mitigate allergy and asthma risks.
