Health experts advise on safe air conditioning use during heatwaves
Medical experts are highlighting the health risks and proper usage of air conditioning during extreme heat. Pediatric specialist Dr. Mihaela Guțu-Robu notes that while air conditioning is a vital tool to prevent overheating in children, improper use—such as incorrect air jet direction or neglecting filter maintenance—can cause discomfort or health issues. Experts from UF Health Pediatric Emergency Medicine emphasize that an overheated car cabin is often more dangerous for a child than properly managed air conditioning.
Additionally, pulmonologist Emilia Tabacu warns of respiratory risks associated with poorly maintained units. Accumulation of bacteria, viruses, allergens, and dust mites in filters and tubing can lead to eye and nasal irritation, congestion, and sneezing. There is also a serious risk of severe pneumonia from bacteria such as Legionella if systems are not regularly cleaned by professionals. Dry air from these units can further dehydrate respiratory passages, potentially aggravating allergies or affecting vulnerable groups like the elderly, smokers, and young children.
