Health experts advise on seasonal illnesses and home remedies

Health experts are providing guidance on managing seasonal illnesses and the efficacy of various home remedies. Pharmacist Franziska Scharpf notes that while simple remedies like thyme or sage tea, honey for coughs, and ginger tea for nausea can be beneficial, some popular methods are ineffective or potentially harmful. She warns against using activated charcoal for detoxification, as it can bind to essential medications and supplements, and notes that the liver and kidneys are the body's primary detoxification organs.

Regarding diarrhea, Scharpf advises against using cola and salt sticks, noting that the high sugar content in cola can worsen diarrhea and salt sticks lack necessary potassium. She recommends specific electrolytes instead.

In Austria, pediatrician Peter Voitl reports a rise in respiratory infections among children, primarily caused by rhino, adeno, and coronavirus. While influenza and RSV cases are not yet at peak levels, Voitl emphasizes the importance of following national vaccination schedules, including annual flu shots and RSV immunization for infants. He advises parents to seek medical attention if children exhibit high fever, poor fluid intake, or a significant decline in general condition.
