Health experts advise safe exercises for seniors over 60

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate‑intensity physical activity each week for people aged 60 and above to preserve muscle mass, balance, circulation and bone health. French health publications highlight five sports best suited to seniors: Nordic walking, which engages most of the body using specially designed poles; tai‑chi, whose slow, controlled movements improve balance and flexibility; aquagym, a low‑impact water workout that protects joints; golf, which combines walking with coordination and mental focus; and gentle gymnastics, offering seated or standing routines for strength and mobility.

Fitness coach Blanche Von Engelbrechten of Fitness Park adds practical tips: seniors should choose low‑impact activities such as walking, yoga or swimming; avoid sudden, jerky motions; train 2–3 times weekly for 20–30 minutes; stay hydrated; and listen to their bodies. Home‑based exercises using a chair – like seated leg lifts and arm stretches – can also help maintain daily functional strength.
