Health experts call for improved suicide prevention and scientific analysis
Health authorities and academic experts are emphasizing the need for improved public awareness and scientific analysis regarding suicide prevention. In Zonguldak, the Provincial Health Directorate launched a campaign for World Suicide Prevention Day titled ‘Changing the Narrative About Suicide.’ The initiative aims to correct common misconceptions, such as the false belief that discussing suicidal thoughts encourages the act. Experts noted that talking about these feelings can actually provide emotional relief and encourage individuals to seek help.
Additionally, health officials warned that a person’s risk may increase when they begin to show signs of improved energy or vitality during depression, as they may then have the physical strength to act on long-held thoughts.
At Üsküdar University, a multidisciplinary seminar addressed the phenomenon through a scientific and sociological lens. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that awareness alone is insufficient and called for systematic analysis of risk groups and root causes. He noted that suicide in Turkey cannot be attributed solely to economic factors, citing mental illness, substance abuse, gambling, loneliness, and bullying as critical contributors that require detailed diagnosis and intervention plans.
