Health experts clarify benefits of lemon water and olive oil

Health experts are addressing popular social media claims regarding the benefits of consuming lemon water and olive oil mixtures, particularly for weight loss and detoxification.

Registered dietitian Julia Zumpano from the Cleveland Clinic notes that while lemon water does not trigger fat burning or a specialized detoxification process, it can aid hydration by making water more palatable. The citric acid may slightly assist digestion, and the lemon provides a small amount of Vitamin C. However, there is no scientific evidence that lemon water alone causes weight loss; its benefit lies in replacing high-calorie beverages.

Similarly, the trend of consuming olive oil and lemon juice on an empty stomach is scrutinized. While olive oil offers healthy monounsaturated fats and polyphenols that may support heart health and satiety, and lemon provides antioxidants, experts clarify that these drinks do not 'detoxify' the body. The liver and kidneys are responsible for natural detoxification. Furthermore, because olive oil is calorie-dense, adding it to a diet without reducing other caloric intake could potentially lead to weight gain rather than loss.
