Health experts clarify causes of genital and scalp itching

Medical experts and institutions have provided insights into common causes of itching in different bodily regions. According to the Cleveland Clinic, genital itching can stem from dryness, allergic reactions, or irritation from hygiene products. While often non-serious, persistent itching accompanied by rashes or abnormal discharge may indicate fungal infections, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections. Dermatological conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and lichen sclerosus are also potential causes.

Regarding scalp health, specialists from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC) clarify that head lice infestations are not a sign of poor hygiene. In fact, lice may prefer clean hair. Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact or sharing personal items like combs and hats. The condition is most frequent among children aged 3 to 12. Symptoms include intense itching, particularly behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, and the presence of nits. Treatment typically involves specific shampoos, lotions, and manual removal.
