Health experts clarify myths on kidney stones and ice water

Health experts and Indonesian Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin have addressed common misconceptions regarding hydration and weight management.

Regarding kidney health, Dr. Cecep Hermawan noted that while drinking sufficient water helps dilute urine, it does not necessarily prevent kidney stones caused by uric acid. He explained that urine acidity (pH levels) is a critical factor; highly acidic urine makes it harder for uric acid to dissolve, potentially leading to crystal accumulation and stone formation, even if urine appears clear.

On the topic of weight management, Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin clarified that drinking ice water does not cause weight gain because pure water contains zero calories. He emphasized that weight increases are actually linked to beverages with added sugar, such as iced coffee or syrups, which can lead to fat storage and increased diabetes risk when consumed in excess.
