Health experts clarify nutrition differences between farmed and wild seafood
Scientific and regulatory bodies explain that nutritional differences between farm‑raised and wild‑caught fish depend on species, diet, water quality, size and age rather than simply the production method. Both types can provide protein, vitamins and omega‑3 fatty acids, but farmed fish may contain higher total fat while wild fish are often leaner. Mercury risk is linked to the fish’s size and trophic level, not to whether it is farmed; large predators such as shark, swordfish and some tuna accumulate more mercury.
Nutrition specialists in Colombia advise consumers to read canned‑tuna labels carefully to assess protein content, sodium levels and the liquid used. Tuna offers protein, vitamin D, B12 and omega‑3s, but it also has a higher tendency to accumulate mercury, so moderation is recommended. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) both state that properly regulated aquaculture and wild fisheries can contribute to a healthy diet when safety and sustainability standards are met.
