Health experts discuss winter fatigue, vitamin D, and seasonal depression

Medical experts are highlighting the distinction between routine winter fatigue and more serious health conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and vitamin D deficiency. As daylight hours decrease, changes in the light and dark cycle can disrupt biological rhythms, specifically affecting melatonin and serotonin production. This often manifests as increased sleepiness, low energy, difficulty concentrating, and mood fluctuations.

Associate Professor Sinan Tanyolaç warns that persistent symptoms affecting daily life, social interactions, or work should not be dismissed as merely seasonal. He notes that SAD can involve increased appetite, particularly for carbohydrates, and weight gain. Additionally, reduced sunlight can limit the body's production of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and calcium regulation.

Separately, health specialists note that winter weather can exacerbate joint pain. Low temperatures and changes in atmospheric pressure can increase the viscosity of synovial fluid and make pain receptors more sensitive. Experts recommend maintaining physical activity through light walking and stretching to prevent joint stiffness and muscle weakness caused by inactivity.
