Health experts discuss the physiological impacts of chronic stress and anxiety
Endocrinologist Megi Lekbello has highlighted the physiological impact of chronic stress on the human body. During a recent appearance, she explained that prolonged stress disrupts the natural production of cortisol. While cortisol is essential for providing energy in the morning and facilitating sleep at night, a disruption in this circadian rhythm can lead to fatigue and exhaustion.
Lekbello warned that high levels of cortisol resulting from chronic stress can contribute to the weakening of muscle mass and the erosion of bone density, potentially leading to osteoporosis. She emphasized that the health risks are primarily associated with chronic, long-term stress rather than isolated daily pressures.
In relation to managing anxiety and stress, experts suggest several practical techniques. These include deep breathing exercises, such as the 4-7-8 method, and physical activities like yoga or walking to improve mood. Other methods include grounding techniques to focus on the present moment, questioning negative thoughts to distinguish fact from emotion, and using aromatherapy with scents like lavender or chamomile to promote relaxation.
