Health experts emphasize lifestyle habits for longevity
Medical experts and researchers are emphasizing the importance of lifestyle habits and preventive health measures to improve both lifespan and healthspan—the period of life spent in good health.
Dr. Annu Navani, Medical Director at Le Reve Wellness in California, suggests focusing on fundamental, low-cost habits rather than expensive anti-aging technologies. She highlights quality sleep as a cornerstone of healthy aging, recommending at least seven hours of rest per night and suggesting that individuals avoid eating or using electronic devices 3–4 hours before bedtime to improve sleep quality.
Complementary research from the University of Helsinki, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, underscores the impact of managing cardiovascular risk factors. A study of Finnish men found that maintaining five specific low-risk factors during middle age—not smoking, a BMI under 25, systolic blood pressure below 140 mmHg, total cholesterol below 6.0 mmol/L, and healthy blood glucose levels—significantly increased the likelihood of reaching age 90. While 41.9% of those meeting all five criteria lived to 90 or older, only 6.8% of those who did not meet these criteria reached that age.
