Health experts highlight limitations of Body Mass Index
Public health researchers and experts are highlighting the limitations of Body Mass Index (BMI) as a sole indicator of individual health. While BMI serves as a general screening tool by comparing weight to height, it fails to account for critical physiological variables such as muscle mass, fat distribution, and metabolic function.
Data from the Belgian institute Sciensano indicates that an elevated BMI does not automatically signify poor health or impending illness. Because the metric cannot distinguish between heavy muscle tissue and excess body fat, individuals with high muscle mass may be misclassified. Conversely, those within a ‘healthy’ BMI range may still possess high levels of abdominal fat that pose health risks.
Health professionals recommend a broader assessment of well-being, including factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, physical activity, diet, sleep habits, and mental health. Experts also note the potential emotional and psychological impact of over-emphasizing weight, particularly regarding stress and unhealthy behaviors in teenagers.
