Health experts identify unexpected risks and misdiagnosed conditions in aging
Medical experts are highlighting various health risks and often-overlooked conditions that affect aging populations. While hearing loss is frequently attributed to age or loud noise exposure, neurotologist Nick Andresen of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center notes that lifestyle factors such as smoking and medical conditions like high blood pressure can also contribute to hearing impairment.
In geriatric care, certain conditions are frequently misdiagnosed because their symptoms mimic common aging processes. These include bullous pemphigoid, an autoimmune skin condition that presents as fluid-filled blisters often mistaken for eczema, and the phenomenon of prescribing cascades. A prescribing cascade occurs when a side effect from one medication is misidentified as a new medical issue, leading to the prescription of additional drugs and creating a cycle of unintended side effects.
