Turkey school supply costs rise 25% ahead of new academic year

The average cost to fill a school bag is estimated at 2,500 TL, though this can rise to 5,500 TL for high school students depending on brand and quality.
Experts and industry leaders are issuing several warnings to parents. The Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) emphasizes the importance of checking for CE and TSE marks to avoid 'under-the-counter' products that may contain harmful heavy metals like cadmium or arsenic, or chemicals like bisphenol A. Health professionals also advise selecting ergonomic bags, breathable cotton clothing, and ensuring children are psychologically and physically prepared through proper sleep and nutrition routines.
Local trade unions, such as the Isparta Chamber of Craftsmen and Artisans, are encouraging families to support local businesses rather than large chain markets. They note that while chain stores may offer lower prices, local retailers contribute more significantly to the regional economy and employment.
