Health experts issue travel and heat safety guidance for pregnant women

Obstetrics specialists in Turkey and Syria have issued practical advice for pregnant women. In Turkey, Op. Dr. Derya Ertürk of ÖzleDenizliTekden Hospital said travel is generally safe, with the second trimester (weeks 14‑28) being the most suitable period. She warned that women with early‑labour risk, vaginal bleeding, severe hypertension, pre‑eclampsia, or multiple pregnancies should consult their doctor before traveling. Recommended measures include taking a break every two hours on long car trips, staying well‑hydrated on planes and buses, walking short distances in the aisle, and fastening seat belts low on the abdomen. Ertürk also advised carrying pregnancy cards and medication.

In Syria, Dr. Yasemin Eser Boz of Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Hospital highlighted the danger of dehydration in hot weather, noting that insufficient fluid intake can trigger uterine contractions and increase the risk of early birth. She recommended pregnant women drink at least 2.5‑3 liters of water daily, avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and use protective clothing, wide‑brimmed hats, UV‑filtered sunglasses, and high‑SPF sunscreen when exposure is unavoidable. Boz also suggested choosing breathable, natural fabrics and avoiding heavy, oily foods during summer.
