Health experts provide autumn vaccination and respiratory virus guidance

As autumn approaches, medical experts are providing guidance on vaccination schedules and managing respiratory illnesses. Pathologist Giorgos Pappas highlights that now is an ideal time for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccinations, particularly for individuals over 75 and those aged 60-75 with underlying health conditions. He notes that protection from previous RSV vaccinations often lasts, meaning annual doses may not be required.

Regarding influenza and COVID-19, experts suggest waiting until late September or early October when updated vaccines become available. For those over 65, enhanced flu vaccines are recommended. Additionally, medical professionals emphasize the importance of other vaccinations, such as pneumococcus, shingles, and tetanus, to maintain adult immunity.

With cases of COVID-19, RSV, and influenza expected to rise during winter months, distinguishing between them can be difficult due to overlapping symptoms like fever, cough, and fatigue. Dr. Daniel Allan advises that the only definitive way to distinguish COVID-19 from the flu is through testing. To manage flu symptoms, experts recommend prioritizing rest, maintaining high levels of hydration with water or electrolytes, and avoiding sugary or caffeinated drinks.
