Health experts provide guidance on ergonomic school backpack use

Medical experts are providing guidance on selecting and using school backpacks to prevent spinal and musculoskeletal issues in children.

Orthopedic specialists emphasize that a backpack should fit the natural curve of the spine and be positioned so the top rests at the shoulder line and the bottom does not hang below the hips. To ensure even weight distribution and protect joints, children should always use both shoulder straps. While a poorly chosen bag may not be the sole cause of scoliosis, it can exacerbate existing conditions.

Regarding weight, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a guideline where a backpack should not exceed approximately 15 percent of a child's body weight. However, experts note that because physical strength and body types vary, the most effective rule is to keep the load as light as possible. Signs of excessive weight include a child leaning forward while walking or shoulder straps digging deeply into the shoulders. Experts advise reducing the load even if the child has not yet reported pain.
