Health experts provide guidance on safe coffee consumption habits

Medical experts are providing guidance on the optimal ways to consume coffee to maximize health benefits while minimizing risks to cardiovascular and renal systems.

Regarding cardiovascular health, physician Takeshi Kaijima warns that drinking coffee immediately upon waking, especially on an empty stomach, can increase blood pressure and heart rate. This is due to the body's natural cortisol spike and slight dehydration during sleep. Individuals over 40, those with anxiety, heart palpitations, or a family history of hypertension should be particularly cautious. Recommendations include drinking water first, waiting 30 to 60 minutes after waking, and consuming coffee after breakfast.

On the topic of renal health, physician Hung Yung-hsiang notes that moderate consumption of black coffee may reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease by 11% to 18% due to antioxidants like chlorogenic acid. To enhance these benefits, it is suggested to avoid sugar and non-dairy creamers. One method mentioned is adding extra virgin olive oil to black coffee to combine antioxidants and improve vascular protection, though this should not replace medical treatment.
