Health experts recommend D-vitamin supplements starting in October
Health experts recommend that adults and children aged four and older begin taking daily D-vitamin supplements in October. This recommendation follows the seasonal shift in sunlight intensity at northern latitudes.
From October to April, UVB rays are generally insufficient for the skin to produce necessary levels of D-vitamin. During this period, the body relies on stores built up during the summer months. Health authorities suggest a daily dose of between 5 and 10 micrograms to compensate for the lack of sunlight and the difficulty of meeting requirements through diet alone, as foods like fatty fish only cover a small portion of the need.
Certain groups are advised to take 10 micrograms of D-vitamin daily throughout the entire year, regardless of the season. These include pregnant women, children, and adults with darker skin, as well as individuals who spend very little time outdoors or wear clothing that covers most of the body during summer.
