Health Experts Recommend Eight Foods for Adults Over 50

Nutrition specialists have identified eight foods that can support heart, bone, muscle and brain health for people aged 50 and above. The list emphasizes berries, other antioxidant‑rich fruits, vegetables, lean meats and a reduction in saturated fats and added sugars. Christine Rosenbloom notes that energy needs decline after age 50, so calories must be chosen more carefully. Marie Bernard of the NIH stresses the importance of abundant fruits, vegetables and lean protein, while Joseph Gonzales of the Mayo Clinic likens a balanced diet to “an entire symphony orchestra.”

Research cited includes a 2020 Tufts University study of 2,800 participants showing that low flavonoid intake was associated with a two‑to‑four‑fold higher risk of dementia, a 2022 King’s College London trial indicating that 100 g of berries daily may lower cardiovascular risk, and a UC Davis investigation suggesting dried goji berries could help protect against macular degeneration. Wild blueberries are reported to contain three to four times more antioxidants than other varieties. Together, these foods are said to help control blood pressure, lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers, and support overall longevity for older adults.
