Cancer prevention and therapy access remain critical priorities for regional health experts
Medical experts and health organizations are emphasizing the critical importance of cancer prevention and the accessibility of modern therapies across the Balkan region and globally. Research indicates that approximately 37 to 40 percent of cancer cases could be prevented by addressing lifestyle risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and poor diet.
In Montenegro, discussions have focused on the necessity of early detection, organized screening, and continuous support for patients to improve treatment outcomes. In Serbia, while oncology has seen significant advancements, experts at the National Oncology Forum highlighted challenges regarding the timely availability of modern therapies and the need for better healthcare organization to ensure all patients have equal access to life-saving treatments.
A global study published in The Lancet Oncology further notes that infections, such as HPV and Helicobacter pylori, are linked to millions of new cancer cases annually, suggesting that vaccination and early infection treatment are vital preventive measures. Experts stress that while science is opening new doors through artificial intelligence and precision medicine, political will and funding remain essential to translate these advancements into everyday clinical practice.
