Health experts urge screen limits and household responsibility for children
Medical and psychological experts in Spain are calling for stricter regulations regarding digital device usage and the promotion of domestic responsibilities to support child development.
The Control Z platform, representing 30 entities and 15 medical and psychological societies, has issued a set of scientific recommendations to combat digital hyperconnectivity. The group urges schools to prohibit screen use for children under six and to implement strict hourly limits for students up to age 16. Experts emphasize that these years are critical for neurological maturation, affecting attention, emotional regulation, and sleep patterns. The platform is calling for a state pact to ensure these health protections remain independent of political shifts.
In a related developmental context, clinical psychologist Antonio Ortuño highlights the importance of assigning age-appropriate household chores to foster responsibility. Citing research, such as a study from La Trobe University, experts note that children aged 5 to 13 who participate in domestic tasks often show better working memory and impulse control. Furthermore, tasks that benefit the entire family can enhance empathy and social awareness in older children.
