Health experts warn against dangerous ‘tanmaxxing’ social media trend

A new social media trend known as ‘tanmaxxing’ is gaining traction on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where influencers encourage users to maximize skin darkening at any cost. This trend, often linked to the broader ‘looksmaxxing’ self-optimization culture, involves seeking high UV index conditions and frequently avoiding sunscreen to achieve deep tans and prominent tan lines. Experts and dermatologists warn that while a tan may be marketed as a ‘physique upgrade’ to make muscles appear more defined, it is actually a biological warning signal of skin damage.

In contrast to these high-risk methods, beauty experts suggest safer alternatives for achieving a summer glow. Products such as Typology’s bronzing concentrate allow for a cosmetic, sun-kissed effect without UV exposure by using Vitamin E and apricot extract. Additionally, intensive after-sun care, such as LUSH’s Sesame Aftersun Lotion containing aloe vera and sesame oil, is recommended to provide necessary hydration and soothing relief for skin exposed to heat and sun.
