Health experts warn against new tobacco laws in Turkey

Health experts from the Sağlığa Evet Derneği (Yes to Health Association) have issued warnings regarding rumored new tobacco legislation in Turkey. While reports suggest potential measures such as banning the production and trade of all tobacco products by 2040 or prohibiting sales to individuals born after January 1, 2015, no official government confirmation has been provided.

Prof. Dr. Elif Dağlı, President of the association, argued that existing tobacco control laws are sufficient and that the priority should be the full implementation of current regulations rather than drafting new ones. Experts expressed particular concern over “new generation” nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, which are often marketed as safer alternatives but are increasingly reaching youth through digital platforms and influencer collaborations.

A study involving 488 patients aged 10–19 at Gazi University and Ankara University medical faculties found that 21.9% had used e-cigarettes at least once, with 12.5% having used them within the last 30 days. Additionally, research presented by Doç. Dr. Osman Elbek highlighted a correlation between tobacco consumption and socio-economic factors, noting that high unemployment and income inequality are strongly linked to increased smoking rates and difficulty in quitting.
