Health experts warn against specific breakfast foods on empty stomachs
Gastroenterologists are warning against consuming certain common foods on an empty stomach in the morning, as the stomach lining is most vulnerable after a night of fasting.
One major concern involves leftover food stored in the refrigerator overnight, such as rice, porridge, or meat. Dr. Liu Aihua of Beijing Hospital warns that bacteria like Bacillus cereus can produce heat-resistant toxins in cooled rice that reheating may not fully eliminate. Consuming these items on an empty stomach can increase the risk of inflammation, abdominal pain, and acute diarrhea.
Additionally, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can trigger excessive gastric acid secretion, potentially eroding the stomach lining and leading to ulcers. Coffee may also relax the lower esophageal sphincter, causing acid reflux, heartburn, and long-term esophageal damage. Other side effects of morning coffee consumption without food include palpitations, anxiety, and tremors.
