Health experts warn of diverse tick-borne disease risks in Turkey
Medical expert Dr. Gültekin Akyol has issued warnings regarding various health risks associated with tick bites in Turkey, noting that risks extend beyond Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).
Different tick species carry distinct pathogens. For instance, Hyalomma marginatum is a primary vector for CCHF, while Ixodes ricinus can transmit Lyme disease. Other species, such as Rhipicephalus sanguineus and certain Dermacentor types, are linked to rickettsia infections. A key symptom of Lyme disease is a spreading, ring-shaped redness around the bite site, often accompanied by fever, fatigue, and muscle aches.
Dr. Akyol advises against improper removal methods like applying alcohol, oil, or heat to the tick, as these can cause the tick to vomit and increase infection risk. Instead, ticks should be removed carefully with tweezers at the closest point to the skin. Following a bite, individuals should monitor for symptoms like fever, nausea, or rashes for at least 10 days and seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.
