Health experts warn of esophageal cancer risk from hot beverages

Recent health insights highlight the importance of lifestyle habits in preventing chronic diseases. Kidney health expert Masahiro Kozuki emphasizes the impact of daily routines, including exercise, protein intake, and specific dietary choices, on maintaining kidney function, particularly for individuals in their 50s and 60s.

Additionally, medical research warns that regularly consuming beverages or foods at temperatures exceeding 65°C can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified very hot liquids as a probable carcinogen because the thermal stimulus causes repeated damage and repair to the delicate esophageal lining. This cycle of cellular damage and regeneration can lead to genetic errors and the development of cancer. While smoking and alcohol are well-known risk factors, the physical heat from items like steaming tea, coffee, or hot soups serves as a significant independent risk factor.
