Health experts warn of habits accelerating cellular aging

Health specialists from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and other public health institutions have identified three daily habits that accelerate cellular aging and reduce longevity: physical inactivity, the consumption of ultra-processed foods, and chronic insomnia.

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) indicates that one-fifth of adults do not meet the physical activity recommendations set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Prolonged screen time is linked to increased rates of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, ultra-processed foods can negatively impact genetics by accelerating the shortening of telomeres, which are protective chromosome coatings that determine biological age.

Additionally, insufficient sleep disrupts circadian rhythms essential for insulin and cortisol production. A decrease in nightly rest hours has been linked to the development of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.

Due to modern lifestyles and restrictive diets, many individuals also face nutritional deficiencies in essential minerals and healthy fats. Common deficits include magnesium, which is vital for muscle contraction and nervous system function, and zinc, which is critical for immune system support and protein synthesis.
