Health experts warn of injury risks during fitness surges
With the increase in gym attendance during September, health experts are highlighting the importance of proper exercise techniques to prevent injuries. Common issues reported by physiotherapists include overuse microtraumas in the shoulders, knees, and wrists, as well as acute lower back injuries often caused by deficient technique, excessive load, or lack of warm-ups.
Dr. Xoán Minguéns, Head of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Vithas, notes that tendinitis is the most frequent injury in sports practice, often resulting from repetitive use, poor technique, or inadequate equipment. Experts recommend conducting initial health assessments to identify "red flags," especially for those over 65 or individuals with diagnosed pathologies.
To ensure safe training, professionals suggest following individualized plans, maintaining balanced routines that cover various muscle groups, and prioritizing joint mobility and dynamic flexibility. For outdoor activities like running, experts advise avoiding peak heat hours and maintaining consistent hydration throughout the session.
