Health experts warn of neurological risks and ergonomic impacts of chronic pain
Back pain is a widespread issue in Brazil, affecting approximately 27 million adults according to the Ministry of Health. While often linked to posture, persistent pain can indicate neurological issues such as nerve or spinal cord compression. Symptoms like tingling, numbness, loss of muscle strength, or radiating pain require specialized evaluation by a neurosurgeon to prevent complications like permanent paralysis.
Additionally, conditions such as causalgia—intense, continuous pain caused by peripheral nerve injuries—can manifest through skin changes, swelling, and increased sensitivity. Experts note that while poor posture may not directly cause causalgia, improper ergonomics and repetitive movements in the workplace contribute to musculoskeletal overload. Statistics show that roughly 37% of Brazilians over 50 live with chronic pain, a figure that rises to 42% in the Southern region.
