Health experts warn of rising cardiovascular risks in youth

Medical specialists are warning of rising cardiovascular risks and sleep disturbances among adolescents and young adults due to lifestyle changes and substance consumption.

Cardiologist Graciela González noted that hypertension and other heart disease factors are appearing in individuals as young as their 30s. Key contributors include diets high in salt, fats, and ultra-processed foods, as well as obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug use. She specifically highlighted the growing concern regarding e-cigarettes (vaping), which can increase the risk of myocardial infarction and heart failure.

Additionally, researchers from Yale Medicine have warned that caffeine consumption in teenagers—often through energy drinks, sodas, and coffee—can disrupt biological sleep cycles. Experts Jennifer Jiyun Park and Sabhyata Agrawal noted that caffeine can remain in the system for up to 12 hours, leading to a cycle of fatigue and stimulant use. This issue is often exacerbated by late-night gaming sessions and screen exposure, which reduces melatonin production.
