Health experts warn of rising gastroenteritis cases after Mid-Autumn Festival
Medical experts are warning of a rise in gastroenteritis cases following Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, noting that approximately 126,000 people sought emergency care for diarrhea last week. The surge is attributed to improper food handling during barbecues, mooncake consumption, and high-fat or high-sugar diets.
To manage acute symptoms, specialists recommend the ‘Golden Triangle’ of care: hydration, rest, and a bland diet. For hydration, patients should use oral rehydration salts (ORS) or isotonic electrolyte solutions, taking small sips frequently. Experts warn against high-sugar sports drinks or juices, which can worsen osmotic diarrhea, and advise avoiding caffeine and alcohol.
Regarding diet, recovery should be gradual using low-fiber, bland foods such as white porridge, plain white toast, steamed eggs, or lean meats. Patients are cautioned against using anti-diarrheal medications to ‘forcefully stop’ symptoms, as diarrhea is a natural defense mechanism to expel pathogens; suppressing it can lead to complications like toxic megacolon. Antibiotics are also ineffective against most viral infections like Norovirus.
Immediate medical attention is required if symptoms include bloody stools, severe abdominal pain, high fever, or signs of severe dehydration such as decreased urine output, extreme thirst, or dizziness.
