Health experts warn of risks as parents use AI and social media for medical advice

As parents increasingly turn to Google, AI tools, and TikTok for medical advice regarding childhood illnesses like fever and cough, experts are warning about the risks of the ‘infodemic’. While information is readily available online, it often lacks the necessary context regarding a child's specific age, weight, symptoms, and existing therapies.

Marin Crnogorac, president of the Chamber of Masters of Pharmacy of FBiH, emphasizes that professional assessment is vital to determine if information is accurate, relevant, and safe for a specific patient. A lack of context can lead to dangerous errors, such as accidentally doubling doses by combining different medications that contain the same active ingredient.

A 2025 study by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) involving 149 pharmacists across 52 countries highlights the importance of health literacy. The FIP views pharmacists as accessible experts who can help citizens navigate complex health information, particularly concerning medication safety, vaccinations, and chronic disease management.
