Health experts warn of risks from sleeping near snoring partners
Medical experts warn that sleeping near a snoring partner can cause significant health issues for the non-snoring individual. Snoring, caused by the vibration of soft tissues in the upper airways, often leads to fragmented sleep that disrupts essential restorative cycles.
According to the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association (BSSAA), approximately 40% of adults in the UK snore, a condition more prevalent in men. Furthermore, a US survey by the Sleep Foundation indicates that 75% of people with a snoring partner report negative impacts on their own sleep.
Experts such as Dr. Clare Simon and Prof. Ama Johal note that these disruptions can impair concentration, memory, mood, and hormone regulation. The lack of deep sleep, which typically occurs in 90-minute cycles, prevents physical restoration and cognitive processing. In severe cases, partners may be forced to sleep in separate rooms to maintain necessary rest.
