Health experts warn of risks in extreme dieting and unexplained weight loss

Medical experts are warning against extreme dietary habits and the dangers of ignoring unexplained weight loss.

In Vietnam, nutritionists caution that using chicken breast as a sole food source to replace all other food groups is an extreme method that can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Dr. Le Thi Huong Giang of 19/8 Hospital notes that while chicken breast is a high-quality protein, cutting carbohydrates and other food groups entirely can cause fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and loss of muscle mass, ultimately making long-term weight control more difficult.

Separately, medical professionals are highlighting the importance of monitoring sudden weight changes as a potential indicator of serious illness. A 60-year-old man in China, who experienced an 8 kg weight loss over one year alongside digestive issues, was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma after seeking medical attention. Dr. Liang Cheng-Chao of Beidou Health Management Hospital advises that early signs of colorectal cancer, such as changes in bowel habits, bloating, or unexplained weight loss, are often subtle and easily mistaken for stress or digestive disorders.
