Health experts warn of risks in extreme high-protein diets

Health experts are addressing the rising popularity of high-protein diets, such as those centered on heavy egg consumption, among athletes and influencers. While eggs are highly nutritious and provide essential vitamins and minerals, specialists warn against extreme diets that rely solely on them.

Nutritionist Patrícia Mirisola notes that diets lacking carbohydrates can lead to nutritional ketosis, causing symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and breath changes. Such restrictive eating can also harm gut health due to a lack of fiber, potentially compromising immunity and inflammatory control. Rapid weight loss in these scenarios is often attributed to fluid loss and muscle breakdown rather than sustainable fat loss.

Coloproctologist Dra. Aline Amaro emphasizes that protein itself is not a villain for gut health and is essential for tissue repair, particularly for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s. However, the impact on the digestive system depends on the quantity, the source of the protein, and the overall diet. Diets high in processed meats and ultra-processed foods pose different risks compared to balanced diets that include fruits, vegetables, and adequate fiber.
