Health experts warn of seasonal influenza risks and complications

Medical experts in Vietnam are warning about the risks of seasonal influenza, noting that the virus can cause severe complications beyond common symptoms like fever and cough. At the National Children's Hospital, recent data showed approximately 60-80 positive influenza cases per week during the late summer of 2026, with a 20% hospitalization rate.

High-risk groups include children under five, particularly those under two, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, diabetes, or metabolic disorders. Complications can include pneumonia, respiratory failure, myocarditis, encephalitis, kidney failure, and multi-organ failure.

To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend annual influenza vaccinations. For children aged 6 months to 8 years who have no prior vaccination history, two doses spaced at least four weeks apart may be required, followed by annual boosters. Vaccination is also advised for caregivers of high-risk individuals and pregnant women to protect both the mother and the infant during early life.
