Health experts warn on menopause supplements and female libido

Health experts are highlighting the complexities of managing menopause and female libido, noting that symptoms and sexual desire are influenced by a wide range of physiological and lifestyle factors.

Regarding menopause, medical professionals warn against self-prescribing supplements like Vitamin D, magnesium, primrose oil, or borage oil. While these products are marketed to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and fatigue, experts emphasize that supplementation should not replace medical investigation. The perimenopause phase involves fluctuating ovarian hormones that can cause irregular menstruation, mood changes, and metabolic shifts.

Similarly, research published in 2025 in the journal Maturitas and the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicates that female libido is not solely dependent on age or hormones. Factors such as sleep deprivation, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, and emotional well-being play significant roles. Insufficient sleep, in particular, can disrupt hormonal balance, causing the body to prioritize survival functions over sexual desire.
