Health experts warn on proper use of vitamins and minerals
Health experts and nutritionists are emphasizing the importance of proper dosage and necessity when consuming vitamins and minerals. Magnesium plays a critical role in over 300 biochemical reactions, supporting muscle function, nervous system regulation, bone health, and blood pressure control. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, recommended daily intakes vary by gender and life stage, with men requiring approximately 400–420 mg and women 310–320 mg.
However, nutritionists warn against treating supplements as a ‘life insurance policy’ for poor diet. The Colegio de Profesionales en Nutrición (CPN) advises that supplementation should be individualized rather than taken indiscriminately. Experts highlight that ‘natural’ does not equate to safe, noting that excessive intake of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) can be harmful as the body stores them, and high doses of certain minerals can lead to adverse effects.
