Health Experts Warn Prolonged Sitting Boosts Cancer and Vein Risks

Cancer specialist Dr Tarang Krishna cautioned that sitting for two to four hours continuously may raise long‑term cancer risk, likening the harm to that of heavy smoking. He explained that prolonged inactivity can reduce blood circulation, slow metabolism, increase inflammation, and potentially impair immune function.

Consultant interventional radiologist Dr Mark Regi warned that extended desk work also contributes to varicose veins and leg circulation problems. He recommended three simple movements—ankle stretches, ankle rotations, and calf raises—to improve blood flow, and advised taking brief movement breaks every 30 minutes or standing during phone calls and video meetings.
