Health experts warn seniors of cervical spine risks and household fall hazards
Medical experts are warning the elderly about the risks of cervical spine issues and household falls. Dr. Lin Rui-hong from Taichung Veterans General Hospital noted that many seniors mistake unsteady walking and numbness caused by cervical spondylosis for natural aging. He cautioned against seeking massage or manual therapy for neck stiffness before a professional diagnosis, as improper intervention could lead to paralysis.
Separately, specialist Dr. Huang Xuan highlighted the high mortality rate associated with hip fractures in the elderly, which can reach 15% to 25% within one year. He identified five major household danger zones: dimly lit bedrooms and hallways, slippery bathrooms, areas near beds or toilets where postural hypotension may occur, stairs without handrails, and loose rugs. To prevent falls, experts recommend installing motion-sensor night lights, using non-slip mats, and maintaining leg strength through regular exercise.
