Health habits for managing high blood pressure before sleep

Individuals with high blood pressure should avoid certain habits in the hours leading up to sleep to maintain effective control over their condition.

Key recommendations include avoiding intense physical exercise immediately before bed, as high-intensity workouts can increase heart rate and alertness, making sleep difficult. If evening exercise is necessary, it is advised to allow two to three hours for the body to cool down before sleeping.

Additionally, staying up late can negatively impact cardiovascular health. Research published in the journal Chest indicates that every hour of delayed sleep can lead to increases in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

To manage blood pressure, individuals should also avoid stressful activities, such as intense work or arguments, right before bed. Instead, engaging in relaxing activities like reading or listening to music for 30 to 60 minutes is recommended. Finally, patients should never self-medicate or change their prescribed blood pressure medication without professional guidance.
