Health impacts of caffeine consumption and timing

Reducing or eliminating caffeine consumption can lead to various physiological and psychological effects. In the short term, individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, lethargy, or depression. These symptoms typically peak within the first one to two days and generally subside within one to two weeks as brain signaling receptors and hormones regulate themselves.

Long-term benefits of reducing caffeine may include more stable energy levels throughout the day, reduced anxiety, and improved sleep hygiene.

Additionally, the timing of coffee consumption affects nutrient absorption. Consuming coffee immediately after meals can significantly hinder the absorption of non-heme iron—the type found in plant-based foods like beans and dark leafy greens. Studies suggest that coffee can reduce this absorption by 60% to 90%. This is particularly concerning for women, who are at a higher risk of iron deficiency, potentially leading to anemia, fatigue, and decreased physical or mental performance.
