Health impacts of extreme heat and seasonal changes

Extreme heat in Nairobi is causing residents to experience dizziness, weakness, and fatigue. As the body attempts to regulate temperature through sweating, the loss of water and electrolytes can lead to dehydration. This condition is often marked by thirst, dry mouth, headaches, and dark urine. Additionally, heat causes blood vessels near the skin to widen to release heat, which can lower blood pressure and cause lightheadedness, particularly in those working outdoors or commuting in poorly ventilated areas.

Separately, seasonal changes are contributing to energy slumps, sometimes referred to as seasonal asthenia. Shorter daylight hours can disrupt body clocks, sleep patterns, and mood, leading to feelings of lethargy during autumn and winter. Experts suggest that while seasonal fatigue is common, persistent exhaustion should be evaluated by a medical professional to rule out other underlying health conditions.
