Health impacts of returning from vacation

Returning from vacation can trigger physiological and psychological adjustments as the body transitions from a relaxed schedule back to daily routines. Psychologists refer to the temporary feelings of melancholy, irritability, or fatigue experienced during this period as ‘post-vacation blues.’ This is considered a natural reaction to the sudden change in pace, as the brain must shift from a state of leisure and autonomy back to strict schedules, deadlines, and early alarms.

To ease this transition, experts suggest creating a ‘bridge’ between rest and work, such as allowing one or two buffer days to reintegrate into a routine.

In addition to mental shifts, the digestive system often requires time to rebalance. Changes in diet, increased alcohol or sugar consumption, irregular meal times, and disrupted sleep patterns during travel can affect the gut microbiome. The gut operates on its own biological rhythm influenced by sleep-wake cycles; therefore, jet lag and irregular schedules can slow digestion. While ‘traveler’s diarrhea’ is often linked to contaminated food or water, general environmental changes and lifestyle shifts during holidays can also temporarily disrupt digestive equilibrium.
