Health impacts of seasonal autumn changes

As seasonal changes occur in autumn, individuals may experience increased physical and mental health challenges, including joint stiffness and heightened anxiety.

Regarding physical health, the phenomenon of ‘startup pain’—stiffness felt when first moving after rest—can be a sign of degenerative arthritis. While brief stiffness that resolves quickly with movement is common in osteoarthritis, persistent stiffness lasting over an hour or accompanied by swelling and heat may indicate inflammatory conditions. Experts suggest strengthening the quadriceps and gluteal muscles to improve knee stability and managing weight to reduce joint pressure.

Mentally, the reduction in sunlight exposure can lead to lower serotonin levels and increased melatonin, contributing to autumn anxiety and lethargy. This seasonal shift can also trigger feelings of depression or stress related to the end of the year. Recommended preventative measures include seeking morning sunlight, engaging in at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, and maintaining regular sleep patterns to stabilize biological rhythms.
