Health impacts of sugar consumption and dietary guidelines

Sugar serves as a vital energy source for the body, but excessive consumption can lead to significant health complications. It is categorized into natural sugars, found in fruits, vegetables, and milk, and added sugars, which are introduced during food processing.

Added sugars, such as sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, are commonly found in sweets, soft drinks, desserts, and processed snacks. Beverages represent the largest source of added sugar, accounting for approximately 50% of total consumption.

High intake of added sugar can contribute to weight gain and increased risks for various conditions, including hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, joint degeneration, chronic pain, and cancer. Additionally, limiting added sugar to less than 10% of daily energy intake can significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay.
