Health impacts of UHT milk and dairy vs. plant‑based alternatives

Milk packaged in aseptic cartons (UHT) is not intrinsically harmful. The carton material does not contact the milk directly; a thin polyethylene and sometimes aluminium layer provides a barrier. UHT processing heats milk to 135–150 °C for a few seconds, eliminating most microorganisms and allowing shelf‑life of up to nine months. The main nutritional changes are modest losses of heat‑sensitive vitamins such as B12, folate and C, while protein, calcium and overall energy content remain comparable to fresh milk. Health complaints after drinking UHT milk are usually linked to lactose intolerance or allergic reactions to milk proteins rather than the packaging itself.

Recent nutrition research challenges the view that full‑fat dairy is detrimental to heart health. A 25‑year study of young adults found a 24 % lower risk of coronary artery calcification among those consuming the most full‑fat dairy products, possibly due to calcium, potassium and vitamin D content or displacement of less healthy foods. Other studies suggest that saturated fat from dairy may be metabolised differently than that from meat or tropical oils. Plant‑based milks (oat, coconut, nut, rice) offer alternative nutrient profiles but vary widely in protein, calcium and added sugars. Overall, choice of milk should consider individual tolerance, overall diet composition and specific nutritional needs.
