Health indicators: Nocturia and difficulty with daily tasks
Medical experts and researchers are highlighting specific physiological and behavioral changes that may indicate underlying health issues.
Urologists note that while waking up once a night to urinate may be normal, waking up twice or more is classified as nocturia. This condition can disrupt sleep and may signal urinary disorders or other serious health problems, particularly in older adults who face increased fall risks in the dark. Symptoms requiring medical attention include daytime frequency, urgency, difficulty emptying the bladder, weak stream, or blood in the urine.
Additionally, research from Yonsei University involving over 6,000 adults suggests that increasing difficulty with instrumental daily activities—such as cooking, laundry, managing finances, or taking medication—can be a predictor of declining health and shorter life expectancy. The study found a correlation between the loss of independence in these complex tasks and higher rates of depressive symptoms.
